Tamara de Lempicka art prints and posters 4 items

Tamara de Lempicka was a glamour icon in her own right during the Roaring 20s era in Paris. Born in 1898 as Maria Górska in Warsaw, Poland into an affluent family, Lempicka was the middle of two children. However, de Lempicka was secretive about her past, so there is little record of her life before Paris. Earning the title of “steely-eyed goddess of the automobile age” by the New York Times, de Lempicka set about translating her Art Deco vision into painting.

Her distinctive and bold painting style sought to emulate the sensual side of the Art Deco movement in France. Employing technique that were clean, precise and elegant, Tamara de Lempicka firstly painted portraits of writers, scientists, and many of Eastern Europe's exiled nobility. The artist joined the most fashionable circles in Paris – knowing Picasso, Jean Cocteau and Greta Garbo. Also famous for her bisexuality, Lempicka had many scandalous affairs, while also representing the formal and narrative elements of them in her portraits and nudes.

Eventually relocating to New York, her art became overshadowed by the growing Abstract Expressionism movement in the US. In 1978, the artist moved to Mexico permanently, buying a beautiful house in Cuernavaca called Tres Bambus. Depressed at the thought of growing old, she constantly sought the company of young people. Tamara de Lempicka died in March 1980 with her daughter Kizette by her side.
