Royal Wedding: Rule Britannia or Anarchy in the UK?

General
Opposing Images of Queen Elizabeth II

Two opposing images of Queen Elizabeth II, who will be a major player on the Royal Wedding day. First up is the controversial Sex Pistols album artwork reproduced as a poster contrasted against a more respectful pop art portrait by Andy Warhol.

Royal Wedding fever, has now reached a, er, feverish pitch both in Britain and across the world, especially in the US, where Americans seem to have adopted Prince William and the future Princess Catherine as their very own! However, back home,  are you an ardent royalist, a staunch anti-monarchist or simply indifferent to the proceedings that will happen in London on Friday 29th April 2011?

You may have seen an earlier post with the official engagement photo of the gorgeous, smiling couple, but does this interpretation, based on the Sex Pistols artwork of the late 1970s, appeal to you more (though I must confess that I’m disappointed that Kate Middleton’s shiny tresses have been preserved in this supposedly anti-establishment poster rather than mutating into a confrontational mohican that’s the trademark of a London punk!)

There will, obviously, be an intense focus on Prince William (as well as what his bride, Kate Middleton, will be wearing) seeing that  he is the spitting image of his immensely popular late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.  See depictions of the now legendary Princess Diana, which range from the ridiculous to the sublime, seen in Andy Warhol’s perfectly pitched portrait of 1982.

Whatever you end up doing this coming Friday, I hope you enjoy the extended Bank Holiday, which is reason enough to be cheerful!

  1. Thomas says:

Why did Warhol make Diana look so big/ chubby! Poor her and the ridiculous picture of her is sure just that!

Hi Thomas, I totally agree with the ridiculous image of Diana with the shades/spectacles?!?!?
Re: the Andy Warhol print of Diana, the portrait may reflect the fact that she was pregnant with Prince William in 1982, but there doesn’t seem to be an apparent baby bump. From my own hazy recollections, I can only remember Princess Diana as being thinner and more fashion conscious from c.1985-6 onwards.
