In anticipation of the arrival of friend and artist Paul Gauguin to stay at his home in Arles, Van Gogh painted a series of sunflowers, designed to hang in the guestroom. Completing four initial versions the artist was only pleased with two of the paintings, later completing three reworks of them. This particular print is a reproduction of one of the reworks. The original can be seen as part of the Van Gogh Museum's collection in Amsterdam.
