Showing two lovers embracing The Kiss was completed in 1908 and considered the culmination of a period in which Klimt reached the height of his powers as an artist. The work, started using oil paints and then completed through the application of gold leaf, represents a strikingly modern approach to painting. In contrast to much of Klimt's work, The Kiss is tender in its depiction of the female subject, and the driving theme of the work is not sexual desire but love - becoming one of the most popular works on the subject. The painting is now house in the Austrian Gallery in Vienna's Upper Belvedere Palace.
