The most recognisable of any ukiyo-e work, the Great Wave off Kanagawa depicts two boats floating precariously as a huge wave threatens to overturn them. Ukiyo-e is a type of woodblock printing that allowed for cheap copies of prints and widespread distributions, meaning literally ‘pictures of the floating world' the genre depicts scenes from an overtly stylised world. The work was unique for the artist for being the first work of his to include the new Berlin blue pigment, which allowed for a strong colour in the sky and sea that would not fade. The work became hugely popular at the time, with Hokusai's publisher unable to meet demand, and continues to enjoy widespread popularity.
