Lucas Cranach art prints and posters

German artist Lucas Cranach is noted for his fine painting, wood printing skills and a strong association with the Reformation. Born in 1472 the first examples of his art date to 1504 where he earned a living painting still life in the courtly palaces around Coburg and Locha. Enjoying the patronage of John Frederick I, Cranach lived a prosperous and long life, enjoying exclusive privileges as a seller of medicines and printer as well as continuing to paint and produce woodcuts and engravings. His works are predominately religious scenes with clear nods toward his Reformation associations, including works overtly critical of the Catholic Church. Dying at the ripe old age of 81 Cranach’s style and techniques were preserved by his son who continued the artist’s workshop.
