Lilian Medland, the noted natural history artist and ornithologist, was born in London in 1880 and died in 1955.
She emigrated to Australia in 1923, where she married ornithologist Tom Iredale and became particularly well known as the creator of plates for beautifully-illustrated ornithological books. These included the first volume of A Manual for the Birds of Australia, which was written by her husband and by Gregory Mathews.
Her work appeared in many other respected bird manuals and examples of it are now held by Australias National Library.
