John Horsewell was born in 1956 in Essex to a family with an artistic inheritance as his father Ron Horsewell was a professional artist for over 30 years, so unsurprisingly, John followed in his footsteps.
The young Horsewell experimented with all forms of painting and although he is proficient in many mediums, including pastel and watercolours, he prefers the fluidity of oil, finding this ideal to express the use of colours and light in his paintings.
When Horsewell left school, he started working as an interior designer and painted in his spare time, exhibiting paintings first locally and then internationally as his reputation rose. At first, Horsewell started with stylistic influences inherited from his father, and it has only been in recent times that the artist has evolved a more personal style that is his.
In 1978, Horsewell gave up his interior design to fully concentrate on his artistic career, and his paintings are currently in collections in America, England and Japan. Horsewell currently lives with his wife and three children on the Essex-Suffolk border. Absorbing the influence of works by John Haskins and Myles Birkett Foster, John Horsewell continues to produce striking landscapes in contrasting strong colours, as seen in his series of seaside themed paintings.
