John Collier art prints and posters

The Hon John Collier (also known as John Collyer) was a successful painter of portraits and dramatic scenes, born in London in January 1850. His father was a distinguished lawyer and MP, later Lord Monkswell, and he was educated at Eton.

He began his artistic education with Edward Poynter at the Slade School before travelling to Paris, where he became a pupil of J-P Laurens. He also worked with Alma-Tadema and his work was exhibited in London at the Royal Academy, at Suffolk Street and at the Grosvenor Gallery between 1874 and 1893.

Collier was a Member of the Institute of Painters in Oil Colour and his work was also exhibited in both France and Australia. Examples of his work, generally portraits of statesmen and business leaders, are now held in museums around the world and many of his paintings and portraits won prestigious awards during his lifetime.

John Collier died in April 1934.
