Samantha Payne was born and brought up in the industrial north of England, where her close family lived in difficult financial circumstances.
Her family had little artistic background but she was encouraged to paint by her grandfather, to whom she was particularly close, and by enthusiastic members of the art department of her local school. Although she never received formal training, Samantha Payne painted and drew throughout her childhood and also attended local night school, where she picked up the elements of draughtsmanship, perspective and design.
The mother of two young children, Samantha Payne still lives in northern England, where her original paintings are exhibited in a number of local galleries and where she also paints to commission in her spare time.
