The UK's favourite place to buy art
August Macke was a leading member of the German Expressionist movement, with his work absorbing the key artistic influences of the time, including Impressionism, Post-Impressionism and Cubism. A founding member of The Blue Rider group, Macke collaborated with artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc - with the group playing an integral role in the development of modern art. The array of influence means that Mackes work often shifts style, yet the Fauvist influence of bright bold colour remains a persistent theme in his work. This is clearly present in his Tunisian paintings, completed in 1914 on a trip to the country with Paul Klee - they represent a creative peak for the artist. Unfortunately Macke was killed only months later serving at the front during the First World War.
