Alice Buckingham was born in the early 1960s in Hampshire. Her father often painted as a hobby, but she was particularly inspired towards an artistic career by the summer she spent growing up with her aunt in Oxfordshire, where she encountered her first experience of paint and was taught to sew, knit and cook. These experiences set the foundations for the creative career she has pursued as a designer.
Alice Buckingham took a BA Hons. Degree in Fine Art from the University of Reading and a Postgraduate Diploma in Textile Art from Goldsmiths College at the University of London. Now a full time designer, she is inspired by many things and by many artists, including David Hockney, Howard Hodgkin and William Scott, emphasising particularly their wonderful use of colour and consideration to detail.
She describes her work as "a fresh, contemporary exploration of mark making, abstraction and colour, with a reference to traditional subject matter taken from nature". She employs a combination of methods in her work including painting, screen-printing, collage and drawing.
Away from her studio, Alice Buckingham enjoys travelling and photography, particularly appreciating trips to southern Italy, where she finds the light both beautiful and inspiring.
