About this print

River Dee, Cumbria, 1940. Activity on and around the river Dee is the subject of this early Guardian photograph. Although we don't know for certain, it's likely this river scene was taken by Walter Doughty, the Guardian's first staff photographer. Doughty's photographs were known and enjoyed by many but as far as we know his name never appeared in a byline for either the Guardian or Manchester Evening News until his obituary in 1958.
