About this print

Horse Plough, Cheshire, 1940. A farmer sits behind his horses in this agricultural scene from Cheshire. Taken during the second world war, this picture has a graceful quality. Although we can't be certain, it is likely that this photograph was taken by Walter Doughty, the Guardian's first staff photographer. Although his photographs were known and enjoyed by many, Doughty's name never appeared in a byline for either the Guardian or Manchester Evening News until his obituary in 1958.
