Children on a Manchester Street, 1939. Although we don't know for certain, it's likely that this joyful Manchester street scene was photographed by Walter Doughty, the Guardian's first staff photographer. Despite the fact his photographs were known and enjoyed by many, Doughty's name never appeared in a byline for either the Guardian or Manchester Evening News until his obituary in 1958.
