About this print

This is a detail from a painting of a stained glass window at the Church of the Ascension, Burghclere, Hampshire.
Spes is latin for Hope, who is depicted with an anchor.
There are 3 windows in this church depicting Faith, Hope and Charity
The window is in memory of Elizabeth Garrett of Burghclere, born 1834 - died 1921, and was dedicated in 1934.
In the Hampshire Archives at Winchester Record Office there is correspondence between the Vicar of Burghclere and the Bishop regarding the inscription and two small watercolour sketches of designs for two of the three Faith, Hope and Charity windows.
The stained glass is by Powells of Whitefriars but the designer is not known.
