Lichen on a Gravestone-PML0006 - this painting is a study of the very, very small and easily overlooked. Noticed in a quiet cemetery in rural Wales, Pat saw the image as one of peace and tranquility. However, she later realised it was anything but. This is not one piece of lichen but many, each striving to secure the best foothold it can. However, it could almost be seen as a view of the very, very big - a satellite image from space, showing mountain ranges, paddy fields, deserts etc - and perhaps, to the tiny animals that live there, that's the scale they see too. If that tiny patch of lichen disappeared few would mourn its passing. If, on the other hand, the whole human race disappeared the silent lichen-war would go on as it always has.
