About this print

In late September 1942 General von Paulus ordered the 6th Army to undertake another offensive to try and capture the city of Stalingrad and drive the defending Russians into the Volga. The exhausted veterans of the 389th Infantry Division had been in almost constant combat for months but, once again, were ordered to attack and capture the huge Red October steel factory. This painting depicts two members of the 545th Infantry Regiment, tension and fear etched on their faces, taking cover whilst advancing towards the burning factory workers apartments on the morning of the 28th September. The fighting involved brutal, closequarter killing of their brave and determined Russian opponents.
