About this print

This high quality print is based on a coloured engraved plate entitled 'Magnolia lauri folio subtus albicante, Sweet Flowering Bay / Coccothraustes coerulea, The Blew Grosbeak' from Volume I of Mark Catesby's 1754 publication 'The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands'. The work contains 'figures of birds, beasts, fishes, serpents, insects and plantsand additional_info is not null; particularly the forest-trees, shrubs, and other plants not hitherto described'. Catesby was an artist, author, naturalist and fellow of the Royal Society. He visited Virginia, Jamaica, Carolina, Florida and the Bahamas in the early 1700s on plant collecting trips.
