This high quality print is based on a watercolour on vellum illustration identified as Clematis purpurea by Margaret Meen dated 1789. Meen was born in Bungay, Suffolk, England. She travelled to London to teach flower painting and exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1775-1785. A book containing her work titled 'Exotic plants from the Royal Gardens at Kew' was published in 1790.
