Kathleen Notman combines photography and painting. Photography represents the subject as seen with the eye. The painting is the images of emotion transformed into shapes and colours. For this portrait she made a sketch of the actor Peter Finch. She read all she could about him. She took a photograph of the sketch and applied paint to the print. After she painted the print she coated it with varnish. Allowed to dry she then twisted and crumpled it symbolic of the life of the actor. Yet for all the ill treatment, the handsome face remains.
