About this print

History:

Margaretha Zelle was born in Leeuwarden, Holland. She grew up to be a beauty.

Moving to France, she changed her name to Mata Hari and became an exotic dancer. She had affairs with men of influence. Realizing this, the German military recruited her as a spy. She was responsible for the deaths of many soldiers. The French discovered she was a spy for the Germans and in 1917, she was executed by firing squad.

Kathleen Notman's portrait depicts a white, passionless face that of an actress representing Mata Hari. Dark shapes of intrigue and mystery surround it together with shapes that beckon men to her lair.

The original portrait was completed in 1987. A combination of photography and painting, it underwent several transitions before reaching the image seen here.
