About this print

This photograph of the playwright Samuel Beckett is one of Bown's most famous portraits. Bown, who remembers this job as "nerve-racking", recalls that shortly after agreeing to have his picture taken, Beckett suddenly changed his mind. Determined not to go home empty-handed, Bown waited for him at the stage door of the Royal Court theatre. When he came outside, she asked him again and was able to take five frames. "There was hardly any light and Beckett was scowling," she said.
