About this print

Bown took this photograph in Crisp's notoriously dirty and untidy flat. Years of life modelling made Crisp an easy subject to photograph. As Bown put it, "he was a great showman". Crisp's elongated pose pulls the image together from the out-of-focus clutter of the mantelpiece to the filthy gas cooker in the background. In one of Crisp's obituaries, somebody tellingly wrote: "he feared intimacy, yet adored company". There was a great sadness about Crisp, and Bown captured this perfectly in his slightly aloof gaze into the middle distance.
