It's obvious from this photo that Caine's public image was already well established (which owes a large debt to the film 'Alfie', which he made two years earlier) - the trademark glasses and polo neck, the cigarette. By leaving half his face in shadow and catching him with his mouth slightly open, Bown accentuates the gangster/womaniser image. The illuminated left eye, which peers out of the shadow, adds a wonderfully sinister quality.
