Although he was known to be a reluctant sitter, Bown found the late artist Lucian Freud to be charming. Pictured here in his studio, Freud's pose is awkward but his face is engaging. A small screen separates him from the clutter of the working area behind him, of which we see only a tantalising glimpse. Bown said of the shoot: "The screen was a godsend because it contained the picture and also obscured the relative chaos of the studio behind."
