Hopper was in London plugging an ICA screening of his film 'The Last Movie' (which he directed and starred in). Although the film had taken first prize in the Venice Festival in 1971 it failed to get a distribution deal after being panned by US critics. To add interest to the portrait, Bown asked Hopper to pose in front of a mirror so that his reflection became an important element. The overall impression is one of apprehension.
