Bown photographed Hockney as part of an Observer commission to photograph several artists. This picture, taken on one of her beloved Rolleiflex cameras, was shot outside Hockney's London home. By choosing to exclude background detail and focus on her subjects head, Bown made a compelling and striking portrait of the young artist. Although she also photographed Hockney in colour that day, it is this black and white portrait which she is most fond of.
