Harry Patch was, until recently, the oldest surviving tommy from the trenches of the First World War. I painted this portrait in 2008 after being moved by his humanity, wisdom and spirit. I have tried to express some of these qualities in this painting which is done in oil on canvas. Harry passed away recently, his voice of compassion and reason being the last word on that terrible war.
