About this print

The Beatles, Cavern Club, Liverpool, 1963. This captivating live shot was taken at Liverpool's Cavern Club to illustrate Big Time, a Guardian article by Stanley Reynolds published on 3 June 1963. The story focused on youth culture, the burgeoning Liverpool scene and the recent success of the Beatles. Finlayson's technical decision to lock the audience in focus gives the picture a jubilant "teenage" mood and invites the viewer to be part of the crowd. On stage, the Beatles - out of focus but instantly recognisable - connect with hometown fans in an intimate setting. Some years later the band, who liked Finlayson's photograph, would display it on the wall of their Apple office in London.
