About this print

This high quality print is based on a watercolour on vellum by Elizabeth Smith dated 1788. Elizabeth or 'Eliza' Smith was one of four daughters of Joshua Smith the MP for Devizes in Wiltshire. The Smith sisters were instructed in painting by the botanical artist Margaret Meen (fl.1775-1806). The RHS Lindley Library collection holds works on vellum by Meen and all of the Smith Sisters. Eliza married the MP William Chute in 1793 and lived at The Vyne, Sherbourne St John, Hampshire where the author Jane Austen was an occasional visitor.
