Watersheddings, Oldham, 1982. McPhee was on an assignment for the Guardian when he came upon this scene. His photograph records the recent effects of the weather, as well as the intimate scene of a child returning home from school alone. The surroundings, which McPhee gives prominence to by framing the child from afar, have become unfamiliar, transformed by recent snowfall.
