About this print

Pat Phoenix, on the set of soap opera Coronation Street, Manchester, 1973 . Coronation Street had been on air for just 13 years when McPhee shot Pat Phoenix - better known to viewers as Elsie Tanner - outside the show's beloved Rovers Return. The show, set in the fictional town of Weatherfield, Greater Manchester, is one of the most lucrative programmes in British television history. Tanner, who featured in the first episode, was one of the show's core characters and is considered by many to be an icon of the soap opera genre. McPhee took this portrait the year she left the show, although she would return in 1986.
