About this print

Ribblehead Viaduct, the Settle-Carlisle Railway, North Yorkshire, 1986. Thorpe's enigmatic landscape captures the Yorkshire Dales on the Settle to Carlisle railway. Thorpe has returned to this section of track several times. Thorpe's patience (he waited at the scene for the right light) paid off when the smoke from the engine became framed against the dramatic landscape. Although originally asked to photograph on the train, Thorpe chose to seek out a different picture. His result retains a timeless quality and is a strong study of the changing face of transport.
