About this print

Between the years of 1900 and 1905 Monet made regular trips to London. During successive visits the artist produced a series of paintings of the Houses of Parliament, completed from his room at St. Thomas' Hospital. The works are a fine example of the artist's practise of focussing on a particular subject in order to capture differing light patterns and weather conditions. Whilst the artist complained of the drab weather and constant smog, the heavy pollution above the river was able to capture light in a highly distinctive manner. Moreover Parliament's gothic spires provided a stunning backdrop, able to show how the differing conditions altered perception.
