This high quality print is based on a watercolour of Ilex (holly) by Caroline Maria Applebee painted c.1833. Applebee was born in London in 1799 and appears to have been the daughter of a wealthy middle-class family that had conservatories and greenhouses providing access to the plants and flowers she painted.
