Artist’s Statement
“My love of travel and my inspiration in the diversity of humankind has led me to cover a range of fascinating studies from Thai Ladyboys, through the media fuelled obsession with celebrity culture, to the calm reflective nature of the Dalai Lama.
I love to use oil paint as the fluidity of the paint merges and flows to mirror my energy and emotions. I paint people and in particular their faces, as I find this both the most challenging and enjoyable. My paintings capture more than just a photographic image of my subject, but seek to include the person’s energy. I paint to express emotion: the emotion and expression of my subject and my reaction to it.
I am able to expand upon the physical appearance and question their public persona by both researching the subject and, as in my latest works on musicians, listening to their music, interpreting their art within my paintings and using brush strokes to mirror the mood and tempo of their music, merging their art with my own.
There are so many moments in my life where I want to stop and capture a person’s appearance. I like to delve into the extremities of mankind, be it Ladyboys, tramps, prostitutes or celebrities
I paint to help me remember how beautifully interesting and diverse life is, and to help others feel the same”
