Christo, who in collaboration with his wife formed one half of the art partnership Christo and Jean Claude, has been responsible for some of the most monumental art installations created. With much of their work involving the wrapping of objects, buildings and even whole coastlines in fabric, the impact of their work is heightened through the grandeur of its scale. As the perception of landmarks is changed during their brief transformations. Notable projects include the wrapping of the Reichstag in Berlin and The Gates in the couple’s hometown of New York City, in which 7,503 gates made of saffron coloured fabric were placed around Central Park. In order to finance such projects the couple sold original drawings and collages of proposed projects, many of which you’ll find copies of in our collection alongside photography of their works.
