I started painting from a young age and sold my first painting while still at school. Later after getting married, I moved to North Wales, where I met artist David Chance. Encouraged by David, we had many joint exhibitions in North Wales and I had several solo exhibitions around the area. I also sold paintings along the river Dee in Chester every Sunday. My first major success was in 1975 with the First Annual Exhibition of the Clwyd Association for the Visual Arts, where I exhibited a pastel painting called Beauty. We then moved to Wootton Bassett in Wilshire where I studied life drawing. After moving to Sussex my next success came in London with The Pastel Society in 1982. Following this achievement, I exhibited in the eighties and nineties with The Society of Women Artists, now based in the Mall galleries London and in Sussex with The Autumn Art Show. I also exhibited with the New Sussex Artists & Photographers Exhibition at the Brighton Museum and Art gallery in 1989 and 1990. At the same time, I trained with sculptor David Cornell, who is a fellow of both the Royal Society of Art, and the Royal British Society of Sculptors. In addition, I studied with leading equestrian painter William Nassau. I have completed many portrait and painting commissions. One oil painting was for Cummins Diesel, and another was of an Airbus 320 for one of the owners of Airworld. After this I studied biochemistry and obtained a PhD and worked in medical research, I now work as a visiting scientist and artist. This time I create my art work from my sketches completed over several years combining these with computer-aided design. Gillian Owen Artist and Scientist
