This superb French portrait painter was born in 1727 and studied under his father and François Boucher, among others.
He followed in his father's tradition of painting actresses and became a serious rival to the artist, Nattier. He worked for Madame Du Barry and the Royal Family, and showed a particular flair in painting children.
In 1771, scandal loomed as his large semi-nude portrait of Madame Du Barry as a muse had to be withdrawn from the Paris Salon.
