Charles Henry Schwanfelder Art Prints and Posters

Charles Schwanfelder, an animal, landscape and an occasional portrait painter, was born in 1773 in Leeds, where he chiefly practised.

He began his career by helping his father to paint clock faces, snuff boxes and tea trays but also made numerous sketching trips to the Lake District, Scotland, Wales and Yorkshire to paint landscapes and horses.

The quality of Schwanfelder's animal sketches led to his appointment as animal painter to the Prince Regent in 1816 and then to the King in 1821, when the Price Regent had become George IV. Between 1809-1826 he took part in many London exhibitions, notably those held by the Royal Academy and the British Institute. He died in 1837.
