Painter, filmmaker and blonde art exhibit, 'Andrewa Warhola' was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA. Despite having to support his Czech immigrant family after dad was killed in a mining accident, Andy got himself an art BA then 'frankensteined' off in his high rise footwear to New York in 1949, where he firmly wedged his feet in the commercial art world's door, drawing footwear pics for shoe-off fashion mags like Vogue, Bazaar (and What Clog). Meanwhile, back at fine art HQ, Andy's brain was getting to grips with hot intellectual issues of the day like 'the medium is the message', and 'Brecht's theory of alienation', and 'if I mix yellow with blue, I wonder what colour it will make?'. Possibly as a result of this (or because he didn't know better), he began projecting images from comic strips and newspapers onto canvas then dispassionately colouring in the spaces (painting by numbness?). However, employing the same foresight that caused Decca records to reject the Beatles the following year, the New York galleries gave Andy the bum's brush. In 1962, a friend suggested he paint everyday stuff like soup containers and Andy's 'can-do' attitude turned him into an art 'souperstar' overnight. In no time at all, he and his pals were churning out silkscreen Elvis's and Marilyns and Jackies by the Factory full. In 1963 he turned from silkscreen to silver screen and made the first of 300 or so stunningly innovative /excruciatingly boring films. In 1968 Valerie Solanis, ex-Warhol actress and member of the endearingly-titled SCUM - Society For Cutting Up Men - shot and seriously wounded her former employer (happened to Renoir all the time). Andy eventually died of cancer, after somewhat over extending his allotted 15 minutes of fame. <!-- cox -->
