About this print

Visiting Venice with his wife in 1908 for three months in a bid to overcome a bout of depression Monet was overwhelmed by the beauty of the city, claiming its ‘splendid sunsets are unique in the world'. The work, not completed until four years later in the artist's Giverny studio, shows the view of San Giorgio Maggiore Island at dusk. The island's church is silhouetted against the backdrop of a sunset above the sea. The sky is filled with colour as deep reds merge into orange and then dark blue with the same colours reflected in the sea. Unlike similar works, which study the effects of shifting light patterns, Monet here sought to capture a moment of personal significance, with the painting forming a souvenir of his time in the city.
