About this print

From 1893 Monet acquired a pond next to his property in Giverny. For the remaining years of his life until 1926 it would become the focus of his work, providing the subject for approximately 250 oil paintings. The pond, filled with water lilies and featuring a distinctive Japanese bridge, provided an ideal subject to capture the changes instigated by shifting seasons and differing light conditions. Monet told a friend ‘these landscapes of water and reflection have become an obsession for me', something that is well attested to considering the difficulties of old age, including cataracts, that the artist had to overcome in order to complete many of the works. The paintings are included in the collections of many of the world's leading galleries and are considered some of the most important and influential works of 20th century art.
