Inspired by Episode 53 of the original series of Star Trek: The U.S.S. Enterprise is chosen to be the test ship for the new M-5 multitronic computer system, a computer meant to be able to run a starship without human intervention. With a skeleton crew remaining on board the Enterprise, the M-5 engages in war games with other Federation vessels and performs well, but soon starts to behave more erratically, eventually placing the Enterprise in danger.
